General Class Information

  • How long are the dance classes?

Our First Friday drop in lesson is 60-minutes.

Our intermediate swing class is 90-minutes, and includes 60-minutes of instruction followed by 30-minutes of dancing with the instructors and classmates.

  • How big are the classes and workshops?

First Friday typically has between 40-80 students in the drop in clas.

Classes and workshops typically have between 10 and 30 people.

  • Do I need a partner?

No. You do not need a partner. In fact, we encourage participants to rotate partners throughout the lesson. Rotating significantly increases the rate of skill-building, and it’s also a great way to meet others who are interested in this fantastic hobby.

  • Can I dance with just my partner?

Yes. If the thought of rotating is a bit intimidating at first, you are welcome to bring and stay with your partner. We want you to feel comfortable during your lessons.

  • Is the schedule subject to change?

It’s a bummer, but classes are subject to cancellation due to low pre-registration. Each student will be notified via email and a phone call if that happens. To help avoid cancellations, please pre-register or at least drop us an email to let us know that you plan on attending a class. If Big City Swing cancels a class, the student will receive a full refund.

  • Can I drop-in to a class?

Yes. You do not need to pre-register for First Friday or our Intermediate Swing sessions.

  • Can I observe a class before I sign up?

We do not allow observers in any of our classes. The comfort of our students is of utmost importance, and we find that many students feel uncomfortable being observed by strangers while they are learning a new skill. If you’d like to give swing dancing a try, join us at a First Friday Dance or sign up for a Private Lesson.

  • How easy is parking?

We are located at 1850 N Western Avenue. There is free parking along both sides of Western and some of the surrounding side streets. There is additional metered and non-metered parking along Armitage and Milwaukee. (Please note that block of Cortland just west of Western is permit only.)

  • Is the studio accessible via Public Transit?

Yes! We are across the street from the Blue Line Western Stop and just 1 block from the Western bus stop.

I loved the ease of signing up (on line) the reasonable price ($130 per couple for 4 classes) and the terrific instructors (Bob and Audra). I also liked the way they teach the class which has you rotating partners all night to get you used to dancing with others although if you really want to stay with your significant other, they will accommodate that as well.
